Alpine Club Vienna

Group Activities

The Alpine Club Vienna – a branch of the Alpine Federation OEAV, Section Austria – is a club that provides English speaking people living in Vienna to “get outside and get involved” in Austria. The group was founded in 1995, bringing together two groups of people. Non natives to Austria whose German is not quite where they would like it to be, and Natives of Austria who enjoy an English Speaking Club. In a true win-win situation, these two sides meet and explore what the Alpine environment offers, mutually sharing a love and commitment to the outdoors.

Regular meetings and events are the backbone of the club, and spontaneous events add even more opportunities to get outside and get involved. The club is formed from 100% volunteers and works with a “friends inviting friends” guiding principle. We are not tour guides, and we do not offer our services for a fee. However, we can bring you into contact with individuals who do just this.
Each leader agrees to lead one or more events throughout the year. They plan it, and share their experience with the rest of us.

SEPTEMBER MEETING & PRESENTATION

    UGANDA by Gerhard Stöglehner

Uganda - the one-time Pearl of Africa - was treated painfully by war and corruption. Slowly it´s coming back to it´s old shine.
Gerhard will take you on a virtual safari of this beautiful country. The landscape. The people. The wildlife. From morning to evening. From east to west. From south to north.
While working in Uganda for two years, Gerhard discovered the beauty of this country inspite of the scars from its troubled times.

AUGUST MEETING & PRESENTATION
Presentation by: Teresa Catteeuw

          One hundred- thousand Paddle Strokes

The warm sweltering days of summer in Vienna could easily set one's mind to thinking of cooler diversions. But, setting in an air conditioned theater is anti-activity. How can one enjoy the wonders of nature without roasting to death?

Go to the ocean. Hop into a sea kayak. Start paddling. Nature awaits! Remote beaches. Tiny, quaint sea shore villages. Waves lapping at the edge of the beach just a few meters from your cozy little tent. A long peaceful day from one island to the next. Now –  time to dream about tomorrow.

This dream lasted 8 days. Join Teresa as she relives this 168 km. journey from Kos to Rhodes by sea kayak.

HIKE

Sat. July 12 -- Schneeberg via Weichtalklamm

Starting from the Weichtalhaus in the Höllental between Rax and Schneeberg, we will hike up the Schneeberg via the Weichtalklamm gorge.  At the top of the gorge, we can stop for a rest in the Kienthalerhütte, before we continue to the summit of the Schneeberg, the Klosterwappen.  We will descend via the same path, however avoiding the scrambling sections in the Weichtalklamm.
If you plan to go on this hike, please read the
TRIP SHEET , especially the section on "length of activity, difficulty".
