2-day-Hike Traunstein via Naturfreunde-Klettersteig Oberösterreichische Voralpen Suggested by: Peter Levenitschnig Date: 19/20 June, 2004

Difficulty: Klettersteig A/B, but since good physical shape required: H (high alpine).
Duration: Up 2,5 - 3,5 hours, down 2 - 2,5 hours. Difference in elevation: 1.250 m

Meeting and ending point: Parking space at ship station "Hois'n" (east bank of Traunsee, just outside of Gmunden, Oberösterreich)
Meeting time: 19 June, 2004, 12.00 a.m. (noon)

Car connection: Vienna - Westautobahn - Exit Regau - Gmunden - in Gmunden turn left for ship station "Hois'n".
Vienna - Gmunden: ca. 250km. To Altmünster is the wrong direction!!

Trip description:
Beautiful "Klettersteig" beside Traunsee with great views down to the lake, to Dachstein and over Salzkammergut.
Technically not difficult, but straining because of the difference in height (and partly steep).
Saturday afternoon we can do some sightseeing (e.g. Hallstatt and Bad Ischl) or some easy hike.
We stay overnight at Sepp-Stahrl-Talherberge in Gmunden (a hut with "Lager" available).
Since it is also a Gasthaus, there will be probably no sleeping possible before midnight.
On Sunday, we will do our Traunstein Hike:
Starting time: 9.00 a.m. or earlier (depending on when we get breakfast).
In the morning up to Traunstein (1691m), rest at Traunsteinhaus (1581m) or Gmundner Hütte (1661m).
In den afternoon we go down the "Lainausteig" (steep, but no Klettersteig) with a break at Mairalm.
Ending time. Approx. 5.00 to 6.00 p.m.

Equipment needed: Most people do it without Klettersteig gear, but for the utmost safety it is recommended.
Minimum: helmet, maximum: helmet, Klettersteig belt with short ropes, gloves.
Apart from that normal alpine gear. In addition don't forget sun cream, sun glasses, enough drinks and "Hüttenschlafsack". Swimsuit ??? (Traunsee will be clear but rather cold)
Klettersteig gear can be rent at Alpenverein.
