Hochtor from Johnsbach down to Hess-Hütte: 2 days in Gesäuse on 05 September 2026

A demanding two-day hike. You need to be fit, have hiking as well as some ferrata/climbing experience and cannot be afraid of heights/narrow passages/exposition.

You can see the route on the map below. We might do the route in the other direction (both corrections have some pros and cons).

If I don't know you, be prepared for interrogative questions about what you have done in the mountains.

Costs:

- transport (see the map below)

- Wandertaxi up from Johnsbach: 11 euro

- overnight stay at Hess-Hütte in the lager: 15 euro

- half-board: 47 EUR (3-Gang-Abendessen (Getränke nicht inbegriffen) + Frühstück vom Buffet); please put a note when registering if you are vegetarian)

I will ask you for a deposit of 20 euro (hut cancellation fee).

Morning train on Sat.

Back in Vienna on Sun between 18:00 and 21:00.

There's some  uncertainty about the construction works - if it's too complicated to go public transport we will rent a car.
