Dear Hikers,
If we haven’t hiked together before, I’d appreciate a short introduction. I’d love to hear about your hiking experience this season, especially if you’ve done any multi-day trips or summited peaks above 2,500 meters. It’s important to know you’re comfortable with climbing and scrambling in exposed terrain. Those with experience above 3,000 meters will be prioritized — so please include this info in the notes.
I am not a speed hiker. I organize hikes with the belief that nature and human connection go hand in hand — it’s about the journey and the company. My goal is to keep the group together, especially in more demanding terrain. This is the reason why we will have a co-guide on this tour.
I’ve put a lot of care and time into preparing this tour and researching the path, and while it’s something I’m happy to offer freely, it really means a lot to me when people share a few personal words or feedback afterwards.
I hope this experience is going to be more than just sharing photos in a group—it’s about connection, presence, and shared adventure.
Here is my plan for 14–17 August
14 August – Day 0: Vienna – Jenbach – Zell am Ziller
(Note: This is a regular working day)
I plan to leave in the morning and arrive at the hotel after 2:00 PM. Please don’t expect luxury — I’ve booked the most affordable hotel near the train station.
The journey takes about 5 hours. We can fit in a short walk to the Talbach Waterfall.
Hotel cost: €59 (deposit required — I need to pay this in advance)
15 August – Day 1: Zell am Ziller – Schlegeisstausee – Olpererhütte – Riepenkopf (2,900 m)
(National Holiday – Early Start)
- Hike to Olpererhütte: ~5 km, 600 m elevation gain, 2–2.5 hours including breaks
- Depending on the route and weather, we might take the shorter trail to save energy for the summit
After lunch at the hut, we’ll aim for Riepenkopf (2,900 m):
~5 km round trip, 520 m elevation gain, ~4 hours. We’ll return in time for dinner.
Note: Cash payment only at the hut
16 August – Day 2: Olpererhütte – Friesenberghaus – Petersköpfl (2,679 m) – Hoher Riffler (3,231 m, optional)
Another early start! We’ll begin the day with photos at the famous Olperer Suspension Bridge. (If you haven’t seen it, Google “Olperer Bridge” — it’s worth it!)
- To Friesenberghaus: 4.5 km, 340 m elevation gain, ~2.5–3 hours depending on photo stops
- From the hut: ~45 minutes to Petersköpfl (2,679 m)
Optional summit: Hoher Riffler (3,231 m)
Only in good weather — this is a demanding mountain tour.
Required: Sure-footedness, head for heights, solid boots, and good fitness
The return trip to Hoher Riffler may take 5–6 hours total (including breaks)
Day total: ~8 hours hiking, 10 km, 1,000 m elevation gain
Cash only at the hut
17 August – Day 3: Friesenberghaus – Zamser Grund – Jenbach – Vienna
(Sunday – Final Descent)
- 6.5 km, ~3–3.5 hours, 1,240 m elevation loss
Summary of Costs (excluding train and bus):
- 1 night in Zell am Ziller: €59
- 1 night in Olpererhütte (incl. half-board, no drinks): €67
(€20 non-refundable fee, deposit required)
- 1 night in Friesenberghaus (incl. half-board, no drinks): €64–68 (estimate)
(€30 late cancellation fee, deposit required)
- Taxi cost (only if plans change and we miss the bus): ~€20
Total deposit due by 31 July: €109
Meeting point and train schedule will be shared after sign-up.
I’ll also create a WhatsApp group for coordination and to discuss Day 0 plans together.
Looking forward to sharing this adventure with you! Hopefully, there are still some passionate hikers out there without plans for the long weekend — this could be your perfect escape!
