In the early days of the ACV, we often organised "Starlight Starbright hikes" with the idea of hiking after sunset on a moonless evening to see the stars. The 1st Feb isn't quite moonless, but it's a fairly new moon.
The aim is to have an afternoon hike followed by dinner at around the time the sun is setting, followed by a shorter walk back from the restaurant to the end of the hike in the dark.
We would probably leave Vienna around late morning or lunchtime. The exact route will depend on the conditions, but is expected to be a medium length hike (4-5 hrs) before dinner and an hour or so after dinner.
If it is obvious that there is no chance of seeing stars on this evening, it would be possible to postpone to the 1st March, which is also a new moon, but with the potential disadvantage that it is later by the time it goes dark.
We should take headlamps with us, but the idea is to use it as little as possible, in order to preserve our night vision as much as possible.
