Hohenstein traverse on 06 April 2024

As the weather forecast for this weekend is looking good, let's see if there's any interest out there for a short notice hike up to the Hohenstein - repeating a hike we did back in the early days of covid in 2020.

A traverse of the Hohenstein, south of St. Pölten. A reasonably long, but technically easy hike with a total of approx 1000m of elevation and some steep sections. With views of the Ötscher to the south and if the weather is good, as far as the Tote Gebirge towards the west. The hut along the way (Otto Kandler Haus) is not yet open, so please bring a packed lunch and drinks.

Schrambach – Hohenstein – Kirchberg an der Pielach

Travel by train. Car transport not possible, as it is not a round trip. Transport details and meeting point will be communicated to registered participants the day before the trip.

Note that the return journey is on the Mariazeller train line, on which apparently the "Einfach Raus" ticket is not valid. Train ticket from Vienna without any discounts is over €40 in total for both directions. With the Vorteilscard and tickets for Vienna it's about €20. It will be possible to start from Hauptbahnhof or Meidling on a Railjet, or from Westbahnhof or Hütteldorf on a cityjet, both to St. Pölten.  From St. Pölten we will all travel together in a regional train to Schrambach.
