Title :
Moonlight snowshoe hike Pretulalpe - Moderate pace - Because of lack of snow shortened to 1-day hike
Date :
Sun 12.02.2017
Registration starts :

Registration until :
2017-02-01
Type of event :
Snowshoe, 1 day
Organized by :
Peter Levenitschnig
Description :

Because of lack of snow (where we wanted to go at night) shortened to a 1-day trip to Stuhleck on Sunday.
Details of new version will follow per email to all registered participants.

At next full moon (11/12 March) we will try to do it as planned.

The idea is crossing Pretulalpe (a rather flat mountain ridge with great views to both sides) at moonlight with snowshoes. We'll start from Paffensattel (1372m) in the afternoon, arriving at Alois Günther-Haus at the summit of Stuhleck (1782m) at dusk, admiring a beautiful sunset and perhaps Alpenglow. After a hot drink at the hut we will continue at moonlight crossing Pretulalpe. We'll arrive at Rosegger-Haus (1588m) early enough to get a decent meal and hot drinks. Stay overnight there.
Next day we will return via the same route, this time during daylight and with sunshine (hopefully). Lunch time at Alois Günther-Haus, end of trip in the late afternoon at Pfaffensattel.

Route:
11 February: Pfaffensattel (pass near Spital am Semmering) - Stuhleck - Pretulalpe - Peter-Rossegger-Haus (stay overnight).
12 February: The same route back.

Probably not ideal for people getting easily cold ...

Maximum number of participants is eight, therefore registration already closed.

Meeting point:
Feb 11, 2:00 p.m. at Pfaffensattel pass, parking lot of Gasthaus (Gasthaus is closed).

In case of unfavourable conditions (overcast, bad weather, too little snow ...) the hike will be postponed to 11/12 March (= next full moon).
In doubt please give me a call two days in advance. I will also put a note on this trip sheet and send you a mail.

Technical requirements :
T2, Rough areas, broken rocks and boulder fields are not a problem for me. I am sure-footed and free of dizziness
Physical requirements :
K2, 4-7 hours / day; up and down
Duration in hours and
elevation gain :
Approx. 5 hours showshoe hiking each day. 10 Jan.: 600m uphill, 200m downhill, 11 Jan.: vice versa
Max. altitude in metres :
1782
Equipment :
Usual high alpine winter gear for heights up to nearly 2000 meters. During the night at that height, with no clouds (hopefully) and perhaps with wind it might be VERY cold, so bring along one extra layer of clothes. Snowshoes, poles, gaiters, sun glasses, sun-cream and thermos flask with hot tea, little snacks. Head lamp or flashlight (which ideally we should not switch on outside during the hike). Normal hiking boots fit in the binding of snowshoes but should be warm and water-resistant. Snowshoes can be rented e.g. by Alpenverein. Gear for overnight stay at an alpine hut (e.g. slippers, toilet bag, linen sleeping bag).
Transport Details :

Wien - Südautobahn A4 - Schnellstraße S6 direction Semmering, but then not the local street to Semmering, but direction to Bruck through the tunnel until exit Spital/Steinhaus - Steinhaus am Semmering - in the village junction to Pfaffensattel. Approx. 120km from Vienna/centre, but the last 12 km are a small mountain street with many curves. At least 1 1/2 hours. Winter equipment for the car necessary (at least winter tyres!).

Car sharing:
Please state, if you need or can offer car sharing.

I will send you a list of needed/offered. Please organize yourself with the drivers.

Max participants :
10
