So far the winter has not been favourable for skitouring, but currently Präbichl looks promising. It is a small and beautiful skiing resort in Styria that is easily reachable by car from Vienna in two hours. The tour begins at the pass at about 1200 meters height. First we follow the Handlgraben, then we reach Hirschegsattel and from there we proceed to the top of the Polster mountain (1910 meters). From there we reach the Polsterschutzhaus (1802 meters), from where we have a very nice view of the Erzberg and where we stop to have lunch. We can either go down the same way, or ski down the 'Polster Rinne'. Additionally there is the option to reach the ski slope from the Polsterschutzhaus, by following a narrow path and skiing a brief section (about 500 meters) off piste. We should be back at the cars about 2 pm and there is the possibility to conclude with some on piste skiing. You need to be a good skier to join, which is able to ski down a black piste. Also, you need to have at least some experience with ski touring, this tour is not suitable for complete beginners. If you do not have your own equipment, you can rent both the skitouring set and the avalanche safety set from the Alpenverein. If you choose to do so, then check already at the Alpenverein that the whole system is working (bindings are working correctly, crampons and boots are compatible with the bindings, beacon is working and has enough battery). Also, don't forget to bring some snacks and enough water or tea with you.
You need a car to reach the Präbichl pass. I have a car and can take two people with me.
