The Granite Trail (german link) in the Waldviertel in the north of Lower Austria is a technically not difficult mountain bike trail, but approximately 150km long and over 2500m of ascent (and descent). The scenery in the Waldviertel is quite unique in Austria with its rolling hills and small towns and villages, and in my opinion, is the perfect region for cycling.
Although the literature suggests doing this tour over 3 days, it is quite doable in 2, assuming adequate fitness (I did it in 1.5 days a couple of years ago).
Ideally we would travel by train early Saturday morning to Gmünd on the Czech border, and arrive Sunday late afternoon in Ybbs an der Donau, from where we would take the train back to Vienna. Overnight in a guesthouse about half way along the route.
I intend to organise at least one short MTB trip before this trip (possibly on a Friday afternoon), so I can get to know people's abilities for the trip - participation in this will be required for participants whose abilities I do not yet know!
Technical MTB skills are not necessary for this trip (which is good, because the organiser's technical MTB skills are extremely limited!), but fitness, stamina and a reasonable mountain bike (in good working order) are necessary.
Registration is required about a month before the trip, to give us time to organise accommodation and check everyone's abilities if necessary.
Ideal group size would be 4-6 persons. Absolute maximum 6 persons.
