This will be a straightforward, though potentially long day snowshoe hiking on the Rax Plateau. The plan will be to take the Raxseilbahn both up in the morning and down in the afternoon, which means that the walk will not involve large climbs/descents. The plan would be to walk to do a circular loop taking in the Ottohaus, Jakobskogel, potentially Preiner Wand (depending on conditions), Neue Seehütte and a return to the Seilbahn via the Höllental Aussichtspunkt.
Whilst this would not be a long walk in the summer, in Snowshoes this could still take quite a long time.
My proposal for timings would be to catch the train from Wien Hauptbahnof (08:58) or Meidling (09:05), to Payerbach Reichenau (via Wiener Neustadt), and catching the bus to the Seilbahn (10:28). It would be good to catch the 16:00 Seilbahn back down in order to make the bus connection at the bottom.
ALTERNATIVELY, if enough people volunteer to drive (I unfortunately can't) then we would be able to all travel by car and be much more flexible with timings, probably starting a little earlier. Drivers are therefore VERY welcome
- The Rax Seilbahn costs 24.50 EUR for AV members
-You obviously need to have snow shoes and full winter equipment.
-The Neue Seehütte will almost certainly NOT be open, so you will need to bring enough food for the whole hike.
(This page may be updated before the hike because it is highly likely I have forgotten to mention something...)
