Description :

Description:  This hike will lead us to the area of Schneeberg. From Vienna we take a train to Wiener Neustadt, then to Payerbach/Reichanau. We can all meet in the last car of the train from Vienna. The details will be discussed with those who have signed up a week prior to the trip. Then we take a bus (Bus 1746) to Hirschwang train station (520m). We will hike to the peak of Mittagstein (1378m). This is a nice hike, but steep and at times not well marked. After a short break and great views, especially of schneeberg, we will go to Knofeleben-Hütte (formerly known as Friedrich-Haller Haus, name is still shown on older maps and signs along the track). There we have the chance to eat a delicious, roasted goose (must be booked with registration for the trip, see below!). After our break at the hut we will hike back to Payerbach/Reichenau.

Late Lunch at the hut: Goose Lunch – limited to first 10 participants

10 geese are reserved for us. The dish is very fat and comes with dumplings, red cabbage and sweet chestnut. Of course, the hut serves other dishes as well (also vegetarian ones).

At registration please commit yourself if you want a goose or not!

!!! Attention !!!

  • This is a hike! (Not a moderate walk!)
  • Paths and tracks at this time of the year are wet and often slippery!
  • In order to stay within daylight we need to have a good, not too fast, pace with shorter breaks only.
  • A functional torch light with as good as fresh batteries are mandatory.

Please add the following in the Notes field:

1) commitment to goose (yes/no),

2) any price reductions for ÖBB train tickets that might apply for you (Vorteilscard, student / senior?)
