Snowshoeing Wildalpe
(Mürzsteger Alpen / Styria)

Date: Saturday March 14, 2009

Suggested by: Peter Levenitschnig

Description:
Only a short time through wood, mainly over meadows to the summit with great panoramic views.

Route:
Frein an der Mürz (864m) - Sulzrieglam (1189m) - Hochalm (1421m) - Wildalpe (1523m).

Either the same route back or via Freinsattel to Frein or Aubauer near Terz (in this case we had to place one car at another point). We will decide that before we start.

Length of activity, elevation and grade of difficulty:
4-5 hours snowshoe hiking, 660m hight difference, 2,5 hrs uphill, 2 hrs downhill.Technically not difficult, some small steep bits in between. Intermediate.

Meeting and ending points and time:
Frein an der Mürz, Gasthof Freinerhof, 9:00 am.
Ending point: The same, between 4:00 and 5:00 pm according to weather, our liking and the route back. If we like we'll have a social drink thereafter at Freinerhof.

Driving instructions:
Wien - Südautobahn A2 - Semmering Schnellstraße S6 to Mürzzuschlag, then direction Mariazell, via Mürzsteg to Frein. 139km from Vienna/City, 1 3/4 hrs approx.

Car sharing:
Please state, if you need or can offer car sharing. Peter will coordinate this. Contact infos see "Registration".

Equipment needed:
Usual gear for winter hiking, including gaiters, sun glasses, sun-cream and thermos flask with hot tea. There is no hut open so bring along food for having lunch at the summit at noon. Normal hiking boots fit in the binding of snowshoes but they should be water-resistant. Snowshoes can be rented e.g. from Alpenverein, also possible from Gasthof Freinerhof (check by phone if available and make a reservation: 03859 8102-0).

Registration required:
