Snowshoeing Unterberg
(Gutensteiner Alpen / Niederösterreich)

Description:
Partly through wood, but higher up mainly over meadows to the summit with great
panoramic views.
Route:
Gries (770m) - Gscheidgraben - Blochboden - Unterberg (1342m) - Unterberg Schutzhaus
(1170m). Lunch break at summit or hut. Back through Miragraben.
Length of activity,
elevation and grade of difficulty:
4-5 hours snowshoe hiking, 570m hight difference, 6km uphill, 4km downhill.Technically
on average not difficult, but uphill and downhill partly steep. Intermediate.
Meeting and ending
points and time:
Meeting point: Hotel Kaiser Franz Josef, Rohr im Gebirge 2, 9:00 am.
From there we ride together a few kilometers to Gries, our starting point.
Ending point: 4:00 pm or later at Gries. If we like we'll have a social drink
thereafter in Rohr.
Driving instructions:
Wien - Südautobahn A2 - Exit 38 (Wöllersdorf/Wiener Neustadt Nord)
direction to Wöllersdorf/Gutenstein - Bundesstraße B21: Wöllersdorf
- Pernitz - Gutenstein - Rohr im Gebirge. 91km from Vienna/City, at least 1
1/2 hours (50km local street, where often you can only drive 50-70 kmph).
Car sharing:
Please state, if you need or can offer car sharing. Peter will coordinate this.
Equipment needed:
Usual gear for winter hiking, including gaiters, sun glasses, sun-cream and
thermos flask with hot tea. According to the weather we can have lunch at the
summit or Unterberg Schutzhaus. So bring along at least little snacks or a small
lunch. Normal hiking boots fit in the binding of snowshoes but they should be
water-resistant. Snowshoes can be rented e.g. from Alpenverein.
