Schneeberg via Weichtalklamm

Date: Sat 12th July 2008 (or Sun 13th if weather is bad on Saturday)

Suggested by: Roger Starkie

Description:
Starting from the Weichtalhaus in the Höllental between Rax and Schneeberg, we will hike up the Schneeberg via the Weichtalklamm gorge.  At the top of the gorge, we can stop for a rest in the Kienthalerhütte, before we continue to the summit of the Schneeberg, the Klosterwappen.  We will descend via the same path, however avoiding the scrambling sections in the Weichtalklamm.

Length of activity, difficulty:
This is a long day with about 1500m of ascent and descent.  It is only suitable for experienced hikers, in good physical shape who are also able to tackle simple "Klettersteige".  The way up through the Weichtalklamm is for the most part secured with wires and ladders, but a head for heights is a must. Hiking time will be at least 7-8 hours, plus rest stops.

Meeting point and ending point:
In the car park of the Weichtalhaus.

Meeting time:  8.45am (for a start at 9.00am sharp)
Ending time: 8pm??

Public Transportation:
Trains and busses are available.  Please check under fahrplan.oebb.at, using "weichtalhaus" as the destination.  A regional bus arrives there at 8.38 from Payerbach. You would need to leave Vienna a little before 7am to catch this.

Driving Instructions:
From Vienna, A2 Südautobahn, S6->Gloggnitz then follow the signs to Reichenau an der Rax. Continue through Payerbach then Reichenau, past the cable car up the Rax on the left to the Weichtalhaus on the right (in total approx 9km past Reichenau). Reckon on about 1.5hrs from Vienna.

Car sharing:
Please contact trip leader to indicate if you can offer or would need a lift by Wednesday evening 9th July.

Recommended Equipment:
Usual equipment for high alpine hikes including warm clothes, sunglasses, suncream, waterproofs, plenty of drinking water and snacks.  Good sturdy footware.

Comments:
Registration required under the above phone number, or by signing up at the meeting on the 7th July. The trip will take place on the Saturday if the weather forecast for the day is good, otherwise on Sunday if the weather is better then. A decision will be made on Friday evening, and communicated by e-mail to the participants.  Those who have not given me their email addresses, must call me on Friday evening.

Due to the nature of the trip, alpine club membership (or membership of equivalent organisations) is required, and participation in the trip will be at the trip leader's discretion.
