Snowshoeing "Ötscher view", Niederösterreich

Ötscher panoramic view (in spring time!) Photo: P. Levenitschnig
Sunday March 6th, 2005 (alternatively, if weather is bad, on Sunday next)
Suggested by: Peter Levenitschnig
Route description and difficulty: Something for sporty people. The route is via a "Forststraße" (closed for cars) from Erlaufklause to Vorderes Ötscherschutzhaus (not open at that time) and back. The point is: A bit up and down, but mostly at the same height across the middle of a long ridge just opposite of Ötscher, so from time to time great views to this beautiful mountain. Lunch in the open air. No danger of avalanches. Approx. 5-6 hours snowshoeing. Probably not difficult, no big difference in height levels, but demanding because of the duration.
Meeting point and ending point: Railway station "Erlaufklause" (Mariazellerbahn), a few kilometers form Wienerbruck, near Mariazell.
Meeting time: 9.30 a.m.
Route by car:
Vienna - Westautobahn A1 - St. Pölten, exit Süd - (direction to Mariazell)
- Lilienfeld - Türnitz - Annaberg - Wienerbruck - Erlaufklause (railway
station). Appr. 140 km, at least 2 hours from Vienna. Winter tyres required!
Car sharing:
I can offer 3 seats in my car, meeting point would be Hütteldorf underground
station. Need a place? Give me a call: 0699 135 16 232
If needed, could others also offer car sharing, please?
Special equipment needed: In addition to the usual winter gear gaiters are recommended. Also bring along food for lunch and hot drinks (thermos flask) since we will have lunch time in the open air (huts are closed). Perhaps something that keeps you dry while sitting in the snow (little inflatable matress, pillow etc.). Snowshoes is a must; they can be rent e.g. from Alpenverein.
If the weather report is bad please
inquire if the trip will take place: 0699 135 16 232
(In case of bad weather it will not be cancelled but postponed to next
Sunday)
