Hegerberg Walk

Date: Sun 6th Feb

Suggested by: Roger Starskie

Description:
A hike up the pleasant Hegerberg at the western edge of the Wienerwald, with lunch in the Hegerberghütte at the top.

We will start at the “Gemeindeamt” (Town Hall) in the small village of Kasten bei Böheimkirchen, and start the steady climb up the Hegerberg – a climb of about 400m of elevation to about 650m. On a clear day, there are spectacular views from the top over the surrounding countryside, including the Schöpfl – the highest mountain in the Wienerwald. We will stop for lunch at the top, in the excellent, and reasonably priced Hegerberghütte. Then, depending on how much energy everybody has, we can either walk directly down the same way, or a choice of longer ways down.

Length of activity, difficulty:
In general the walk is fairly straight forward, with no difficult bits, although some bits of it are a little bit steep. As we are doing this in the winter, there will be plenty of snow and ice, which will make the going more difficult, but it also makes the views even more spectacular!

Meeting point and ending point:
Gemeindeamt in Kasten bei Böheimkirchen (directions below). Car parking is available in front of the building, and throughout the whole of the village. We will meet at 11 o’clock, with the aim of getting to the restaurant by about 1pm.

Meeting time: 11:00
Ending time: Late afternoon

Public Transportation:
Not available for getting there.

Driving Insructions:
Unfortunately, Kasten is only really reachable by private car. From Vienna, drive along the A1 Westautobahn and take exit number 48, Böheimkirchen. Turn right (signposted Kasten), and drive on to Furth, where you take the left fork, and continue on through Ausserkasten, Mitterfeld and then to Kasten. Once in Kasten, keep driving along the same road, past the junction of the road to Kirchstetten , and the Gemeindehaus is on the left hand side of the road, a few meters after this junction, just past the bank. The drive takes about 30 minutes from the beginning of the Westautobahn in Vienna, and is about 50km.

Car sharing:
I may be able to offer up to 3 people a lift. If anyone else can offer or needs a lift, please contact me, and I will try and coordinate. If someone wants to come by train, we may be able to arrange a pickup from the station in Böheimkirchen (trains from Westbahnhof in Vienna).

Recommended Equipment:
Bring the usual equipment for a winter hike – lots of warm clothes – hat, gloves, waterproofs etc, and I would recommend proper hiking boots with a good grip, due to the snow.

Registration Requested:
In order to reserve a table at the Hütte, I need to have an idea of numbers. Please let me know at the meeting or by Saturday 29th Jan by phone or email if you intend coming along, so I can book a week in advance.

Weather:
If the weather is looking really bad (i.e. too much snow or rain), please call me on Sunday morning to check if we are still going.
