Hike Ottohaus (Teufelsbadstubensteig / Wachthüttelkammsteig) (Rax, Niederösterreich)

Date: Saturday, September 4th, 2004

Suggested by: Peter Levenitschnig

Description:
Starting from Weichtalhaus in Höllental (picturesque valley between Rax and Schneeberg) we hike via Teufelsbadstubensteig (Klettersteig) to Ottohaus and back via Wachthüttelkammsteig (Klettersteig).

Route:
Weichtalhaus (563m) - Großes Höllental - Teufelsbadstubensteig (little break thereafter) - Ottohaus (1.644m; lunch time) - Wachthüttelkammsteig - Weichtalhaus.

Length of activity, difficulty:
Difference in elevation:
1.082m. Way up appr. 3,5 hours, down appr. 2,5 hours.
Part of the trip is hike, plus two "Klettersteige": Teufelsbadstubensteig uphill, Wachthüttelkammsteig downhill.

Difficulty:
Teufelsbadstubensteig is rated A-B (easy to intermediate), Wachthüttelkammsteig easy (A). But both "Klettersteige" are steep and strenuous, T. in some parts exposed. So overall difficulty "High Alpine", free of dizziness and sure-footedness required! PLEASE READ THE PARAGRAPH "EQUIPMENT"!

THIS IS NOT A GUIDED TOUR; EVERYBODY IS WALKING AT HIS/HER OWN RISK AND RESPONSIBILITY.

Meeting point and ending point:
Parking space beside Weichtalhaus

Meeting time: 9.00 am. Ending time: approx. 5.00 pm

Lunch at Ottohaus: Appr. 1.30-2.30 p.m.

Car connections:
Wien - Südautobahn - exit to Schnellstraße direction to Semmering - Gloggnitz- Hirschwang (cable railway station) - Weichtalhaus. 103 km appr. Calculate additional time for driving, since from Gloggnitz there is only slow speed possible (narrow street with many curves).

Car sharing:
I can take 2-3 people in my car. If you want a ride please phone me. Perhaps other members could offer car sharing as well if necessary?

Equipment:
The usual gear for high alpine hikes plus Klettersteig gear: At least helmet is strongly recommended since Teufelsbadstubensteig is very popular (= many people, possibly stones coming down).
Do bring along enough drinks!
