Trip Sheet
Schneealpe
Date: 8th September 2007
Suggested by: Roger Starkie
Description:
A medium-difficult hike from Altenberg/Rax (782m) to the
Schneealpenhaus (1782m) via Nasskamm and Lurgbauerhütte, and (for
those who want to) on to the summit of the Schneealpe, the Windberg
(1903m). Descent directly into Altenberg via Lohngraben. This
hike offers a great variety of landscapes and rewarding views,
including views of the Schneeberg and Rax mountains.
Length of activity, difficulty:
A full day's hike with over 1100m gain in elevation. There should
be no difficult terrain, but the length of the tour and the height
difference mean it requires reasonable physical condition.
Meeting point and ending point:
Altenberg/Rax. Please contact trip leader for exact details of meeting
place (not known at time of writing). Depending on the number of
participants and the number of cars available, it may be possible to
leave a car in Altenberg, and drive up to a car park further up the
valley, saving about 200m of elevation and 2.5km.
Meeting time: 8.30 am
Ending time: 6 pm
Public Transportation:
sorry - couldn't find any!
Driving Instructions:
Wien - A2 - S6 to Murzzuschlag (via Semmering Tunnel), B23 (the road
towards Mariazell) to Kapellen where you turn right on the road towards
the Preiner Gscheid) and finally after about a km, turn left on the
road to Altenberg. Allow approx 90 minutes from Vienna.
Car sharing:
Please contact trip leader if you can offer places or need places.
Either at the September meeting or by phone (see below)
Recommended Equipment:
Usual equipment for high altitude hikes - good boots, warm clothes,
waterproofs, hat, gloves (or maybe suncream, sunglasses and a
sunhat...). Remember, the weather can change significantly in the
alps! Bring sufficient drinks and, if required, snacks, but we
will stop for lunch at the Schneealpenhaus.
Comments:
Registration required, either at September meeting or by phone.
If the weather forecast is bad for the 8th September, it is possible to
postpone the tour either to Sunday 9th or the following weekend.
If there is any doubt about the weather, please contact the trip leader
on the day before the hike.
