We meet at Neuwaldegg - end of tram line Nr. 43 - from where start an enjoyable 5 to 6-hour-walk up and down the Vienna Wood hills, hopefully affording some nice views over the city through the barren branches of the dense beech tree forest.
Following a gradual ascent from Neuwaldegg, we reach the first vantage point (Gasthaus Haeuserl am Roan) and continue from there on forest paths to Gasthaus Sophienalpe (lunch break). From there, we walk down to Rieglerhuette (very slippery when iced-up, as I experienced at first hand...) and eventually on to the Steinhofgruende (via Jubilaeumswarte, but unfortunately not open during the winter months) with its serene & elegant Otto-Wagner buildings housing psychiatric care and rehabilitation and the landmark golden coppola church.
From here walk down into the valley (Huetteldorferstrasze) - optional visit of the Ernst Fuchs Villa ( 10 mins on the road ) - the Villa/ museum is open until 4 pm, a ticket costs 11 Euro, but the building is worth a photoshot just from the outside, too..
Note: Alpenverein membership is NOT required for this hike.
