Description :

Winter skills require practicing and that's what this hike is about. It doesn't replace the AV winter courses but if you were on them some time ago it's wise to practice what you've learned at least once a year.

The plan is simple - take the first Rax Seilbahn (8:30am), walk to the Otto Haus, play in snow next to it and come back with the cable car (last ride is at 5pm).

What we want to practice:

  • self-arresting in snow using bare hands
  • self-arresting in snow using an ice-axe
  • arresting in snow when tied with a rope
  • avalanche beacon searching
  • building a snow anchor

If we have enough time and skill we can also try to practice building a pulley system.

Technical requirements :
T2, Rough areas, broken rocks and boulder fields are not a problem for me. I am sure-footed and free of dizziness
Physical requirements :
K2, 4-7 hours / day; up and down
Duration in hours and
elevation gain :
~7h (but it's flexible), ~50m elevation gain
Max. altitude in metres :
1600
Equipment :
helmet, ice axe, harness, two pairs of gloves, warm clothes (depending on the weather snow shoes or crampons may be needed as well)
Transport Details :

By car (but if there are too many of us it's possible to take a train to the Reichenau an der Rax and then a bus to the cable car station).

Max participants :
15
