When and where does the club meet?
Look at "The Next Meeting" section on the home page of this web site.
What is the
club?
It is a group that has formed within the Austrian Alpine Federation (Österreichischer Alpenverein or OEAV) with English as the main language. Do you know of someone who would like to be involved in the Alpine Club (OEAV), who speaks English? Please let them know that they -and you too- are welcome in our group!
Why are we doing
this?
Because we wish to be involved in the OEAV, and our proficiency in German is not where we would like it to be. But we still enjoy alpine sports and want to support the Alpine Federation.
What will we
do?
Our main goal is to help individuals to become active in the OEAV. In addition to meetings, we organize outings and events where English will be the primary language.
Do I really have to speak English?
Yes. We are an English Speaking group. However, many(most) of our members are from Austria and other non-native English speaking countries. We are all pretty relaxed about it, and if you really want to practice your German, just ask the group to speak to you in German. To add to the experience, we have had others slip their conversation into other languages as well. Why not?
Do you only
offer hikes?
We don't only do hikes.
Check out the Biking, Climbing and Ski
Touring pages
for some of our other activities. Sometimes
we just get together to have fun for cultural
and Social events
(like the monthly meetings), no membership
in the OEAV required. We have activities in Cross Country, Bergsteigen, and light backcountry tours. You might want to start out socially with a meeting to see if this is the kind of group you are looking for. Then progress to a light hike, and eventually join the OEAV and head for a multi-day event. There are also plenty of other opportunities for trips in Section Austria itself.
What are the
hikes or other activities like?
Well, our hikes (and
other activities) are catagorized into
Light and Serious
events. Membership not
required for the first time you come on Light
activities, but will be expected afterwards.
These are usually easy two or three hour
hikes. For events catagorized as Serious,
membership is required,
and approval of the hike leader (remember
they are volunteers) should be sought for
your physical condition. We also have a climbing
group, but they are picky who is on the other
end of the rope. You know, the one you hang
from and saves your life if you fall. Go
to the Climbing Page for more information
about these activities. A brief description
of how we define the catagories and what
our goals are for these hikes can be found
by following the "Light and Serious" link
above.
What equipment do I need?
Not sure what to bring? Check out a sample Gear
List. What to take and what not to take is always a problem. Use this not as a rule but a guide. Just remember that others do not bring extra rain gear nor a spare walking stick.
What have you really done?
Older Tripsheets are a good way to discover what we have done. You can find all of our previous Trip Sheets here, and just click on our Events Link to find the current Events Calendar.
Do you have Photos?
Sure, take a look at some of our online Photo Albums.
What is the OEAV and how do I join?
Well, my best advice
is to visit their
page or call them - but expect to speak
German. Their membership
form is here. Otherwise,
just show up at a meeting with us and ask.
What if I have
an idea of what I would like the group
to do?
Want to get involved
and help us plan our future? That would be
nice. How about checking out if you like
us first, then we can get you involved in
the planning of an activity. You can also
find a blank trip sheet in the archives.
Can I get the
email addresses members?
We do have a list, email
the group leader (links on the respective
Group Pages). We plan in the future to have
a list registered members can access.
I don't get the monthly email, what is wrong?
I have no idea. All
I can do is point you to the sign-up page
and the help page for Yahoo.
After that, I will try my best to sort it
out.
I want to develop my social life in Vienna. What can I do?
I do get this one once in awhile. If you want Disco, this is not the place
I have a question that should be here.
Email
me, please.
