How do I find out whats happening?
There are a number of ways to find out what events the Biking Group has scheduled. First, be sure and check at the bottom of this page under "Biking News" frequently, as news about events will be updated there. You can also go to the Events link and check out the Current Events and Event Calendar for all the Club event news. In the forum, we have an area to discuss the Bike Events and anything else about Biking you'd like to know. We also often contact the group members by email with news on the events.

Who are we and what do we do?
We are a subgroup of the Alpine Club Vienna, who all share an interesting in cycling.
The idea of this group is that like-minded people can get together and do some cycling together.  Generally, the rides are informally organised, often at short notice, through our mailing list or this web-site.  Members are encouraged to invite other members, when they are planning to do a ride themselves.

What sort of cycling do we do?
There are no hard or fast rules as to what our rides are like - they can be hard or easy, flat or hilly, short or long, on roads or mountain/forest trails etc etc.  We do short rides around the Vienna area (e.g. in the Wienerwald), day rides in the local area (e.g. in the Wachau or along the River March) or weekend trips (e.g. around the Neusiedlersee), and hopefully in the future even longer trips too....

Generally we ride at a relaxed tempo, taking in the views, and sampling the local cuisine in our stops in the local hostelleries.  If you're looking to race, then this is probably not the group for you!

When deciding whether or not to take part in the ride, please bear in mind the nature and length of the ride and your own physical abilities, and whether your bike is suitable.  Please also ensure that your bike is in a good state of repair.

What do I need to do if I want to organize a ride?
As stated above, the group is open to everyone to suggest rides.  We just ask that the invitation states the nature and the approximate length of the ride and a meeting time and place, and of course, that you turn up yourself!  Please also try to avoid planning an event which conflicts with the "official" events on our calendar.

What do I need to bring along, on the rides?
As mentioned above, it is important that your bike is in a good and roadworthy condition, and is suitable for the nature of the tour.  But, as things can always go wrong, it is always a good idea to bring a small repair kit with you, including at least a spare inner tube, puncture repair kit, and a pump.  Other things to bring along:

  • Plenty of water to drink (especially on hot days)
  • snacks
  • lights (yes, sometimes we underestimate the distances, or stay a bit too long in the Wirtshaus....)
  • waterproof/warm/windproof clothing, depending on the weather
  • preferably a helmet
  • strong shoes (cycling in sandals in not recommended)
